Meet Andy (again).
You may remember Andy from last year—we introduced Andy to you a passionate ultra-marathon runner, cyclist, and cancer survivor whose passion for cycling and cancer advocacy and research collides in this very event—the Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer.
Although Andy was sadly sidelined due to injury, he’s back in 2025 with even more purpose to support cancer research.
Andy’s journey has been anything but ordinary. In 2022, after visiting a physio for a sore knee, he received a life-altering diagnosis: non-Hodgkin lymphoma that had spread to the bone.
“The cancer was detected in the ends of the bones where they meet the knees and the elbows—but I was lucky we got it very early.”
What followed was six months of intense chemotherapy.
“I’ve done marathons, ultramarathons and fundraising cycles, but they were easy compared to chemo—it was horrendous,” Andy recalls.
Despite still undergoing treatment at the time, Andy rode in the 2023 B2GC event, completing the 100km course alongside 5,000 other riders.
“When I actually signed up for the ride it was probably just around the time that I was getting unwell and for several months there, I didn’t know whether I’d get to the start line.”
Crossing the finish line became a deeply emotional milestone.
“I actually teared up at Ormeau. A few weeks before, I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to ride. Realising I’d made it from start to finish was amazingly special.”
Though he had planned to meet many of you at the start line in 2024, an injury kept Andy from participating.
And sadly, two more brushes with cancer have affected Andy since. In the time since, Andy’s sister sadly passed away due to cancer, and his wife experienced a frightening brush with the disease.
These challenges have only strengthened Andy’s commitment to making a difference.
“Cancer just keeps coming for my family. That’s why I’m even more determined to get to the start line this year. I need to do something. I want to raise as much as I can for research and support.”
In 2023, Andy raised an incredible $4,500. This year, he’s aiming higher.
“I’ve set myself a goal of $5,000. This time, I’ll be sharing my story, thanking every donor personally, and doing everything I can to raise awareness.”
To anyone thinking of taking part or donating, Andy has a simple message:
“Just do it. If you’re thinking about it, then you should be there—it’s a no-brainer.”
“The ride is long, and there will be a few bumps along the way. But compared to what people go through with cancer, it’s nothing. This ride is my celebration—and my way of giving back.”
Andy feels privileged to ride again in 2025, and looks forward to seeing you at the start line on 12 October to support all those affected by cancer.
“I’m so excited to see you at the start line of Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer on 12 October. After injury stopped me from cycling last year, I'll be back in full force – all in the name of supporting cancer research, treatment and care at Mater. See you there! - Andy
