Carpy’s $50.00 Challenge
Hello supporters. Once again, I am taking on the Smiling for Smiddy Challenge to raise vital funds for cancer research and I need your support.
In March, I’ll be heading to the Australian Alps to ride 500km with 12,500m of climbing. That’s 4 times the elevation between Everest Base Camp to the summit – albeit on a bike and not at the same altitude but tough, nonetheless. It’ll be tough but nothing compared to those currently facing treatment.
Same as previous years, to reach my goal of $5,000.00, I’m asking for 100 friends and colleagues to donate $50.00 each. I’m not doing any giveaways or raffles; I’m just asking for you generous donation. I’m aware that I hit up the same people each year so to give you an idea of where your money goes, I asked The Professor, Brian Gabrielli, who heads up the Cancer research at Mater, to give us an update.
The past 12 months have seen a lot of progress in our research. We are currently pushing forward for a clinical trial of our novel combination therapy in treatment relapsed ovarian cancer patients. These women, and this is > 60% of these patients, currently have no viable treatment options, so a new, effective treatment is urgently required. The trial will be carried out in Melbourne and Mater South Brisbane. We should hear about funding for this trial soon. We have also identified how we could potentially combine our new treatment with currently used immunotherapy drugs that are effective in about half of melanoma patients, but ineffective in ovarian cancer. The hard evidence that this idea can work will be this year’s work. If this idea does prove effective it can also be trialled in other cancer types including melanoma and lung cancers where these immunotherapies are currently used but are effective in at best 50% of patients. We anticipate our new idea will increase the proportion of patients that respond to treatment, and it may also increase the duration of the response. The research into these potentially life changing treatments are only possible through your generous support. So, thank you to Carpy and the rest of the Smiddy peloton road crew for their tireless work and your generosity in supporting our efforts.
So, your donations truly are making a difference in people’s lives. I ride in memory of family and friends who have lost their lives to cancer, and I’m inspired by those who have battled and overcome this disease. Those of you close to our business know the year we have just had. After receiving a scary prognosis this time last year, Aline faced Hodgkinson’s Lymphoma head on and punched it in the face. With incredible bravery, mental strength, and terrific medical support, she has made a full recovery for which we are all so grateful. Nic’s year was not so good, with his mum sadly losing her battle just a few weeks before Christmas.
We all have our stories of loved ones lost and currently battling cancer. So long as there is cancer taking our friends and family members, I’ll keep riding, and I’ll keep asking for your generosity. So please, if I can get just 100 of you to each donate $50.00 we will make a difference together.
