New year, New boobies.

The time has come! Last Monday I took myself off to the Mater for stage one of my reconstruction process. I was super scared of this surgery, more than the others, I’m not sure why, but I had no reason to be. Under the incredible care of surgeon Dr K and her sister anaesthetist Dr F and all the support staff, I was in excellent hands.

I have been on the ward now for a few days and I cannot speak more highly of the Mater. The nursing staff have all gone above and beyond to look after me, even the student nurses are excellent. Raising money for the Mater chicks in pink helps me feel like I’m giving back, in a way that will help someone else who is currently undergoing treatment here, or for someone who will sadly be diagnosed in the future.

New reasons to run/fundraise

After last year, I didn’t think I needed any more reason to do this event and raise money. After my own diagnosis which caused me to elect to remove my other breast mid last year, i was met at the same time with some tragic news.

Many of you will have already heard Niv’s story but the short version is Niv was an old school friend who was diagnosed in late pregnancy of her 3rd child with a very aggressive breast cancer. None of us expected her to be taken so soon, and it has only been just a few weeks since she left us and not one day goes by that I don’t think about her and her boys. No family should ever have to go through what hers did and will continue to go through forever.

This is why we need to make sure the message gets out and the funds get raised. I will never forget Niv.

This year I will be plodding along slowly as I will be just a few weeks past the first part of my reconstruction process. A journey I feel a little scared to embark on, but I also feel very lucky to be able to do - something Niv and so many others will never have the chance to do.
