The challenge continues
In March, I’ll be joining Challenge Snowies.
Why am I taking on this challenge?
In 2006 Adam Smiddy passed away from an aggressive melanoma aged 26.
Adam was a passionate cyclist and triathlete, and was honoured by his friends through the establishment of Smiling for Smiddy to raise funds for cancer research through cycling and triathlon challenges.
Smiling for Smiddy has, to date, contributed over $15 million to the Brisbane based Mater Foundation for cancer research and patient care.
In 2011, Rory Flood, the remarkable man in my life also passed away from melanoma aged 39.
At the time of this diagnosis we were told that the treatment for melanoma had not changed in 25 years. Smiling for Smiddy has already changed that.
Ten years ago, in 2015, I joined the Smiling for Smiddy family and cycled from Brisbane to Townsville. Since then I’ve cycled back again, done the triathlon and ridden around South Australia, always exhausted but having a blast. Importantly though, with the help of my friends and supporters we’ve added over $50K to the fundraising pot!
Even more importantly though, in that same time, through research and innovation, I have seen a novel treatment for melanoma go from an idea in a doctor’s mind to a publicly funded drug, and witnessed the lives of other cancer patients (with the exact same diagnosis as Rory) saved or prolonged.
Perspective is amazing…and I know our efforts do make a difference.
So, this year I’m back!... doing the Challenge Snowies!!! 5 days and way more hills (11,000m of up…Everest is 8848m!) than I’m built for!......and fundraising of course.
So many people have come together and supported my efforts in a spectacular way previously so let’s see what we can achieve this time?!?
