About Staff Payroll Giving
What is Hearts at Work?
Hearts at Work is Mater's Staff Giving Program. Hearts at Work allows you to make regular pre-tax donations through payroll deductions. You can donate as little or as much as you want every pay cycle—from as little as $2.
Every donation received through Hearts at Work is helping Mater patients and staff experiencing hardship through Mater’s Mercy Fund and Mission Fund as well as ensuring the continuation of lifesaving research, the education of our staff, and the purchase of cutting-edge equipment.

What are the benefits of donating through Hearts at Work?
Mater's Staff Giving Program—Hearts at Work offers a number of advantages both to you and Mater.
- Your donation is pre-tax meaning you don’t pay tax on your donation and do not have to claim it on your tax return at the end of the financial year.
- Because your donation is made each pay, you only have to make one decision about how much to give.
- Donating through Hearts at Work is a relatively cost-free way to help Mater patients, colleagues and the entire Mater community.
Hearts at work gives you another way to make a difference to Mater patients, colleagues and community.
How much should I give?
The appropriate amount of donations will be different for every person. Hearts at Work makes your charitable giving easy and affordable as it's small amounts each pay cycle. Our suggestion is to start with something affordable, say $5 to $10, a pay and review your level of giving each year.
When will my donations come out?
Your donation will be deducted pre-tax, alongside other pre-tax deductions like Car Parking and RemServ Salary Packaging with each pay cycle.
How much of my donation will actually go to helping people?
All of it! That's another benefit of Mater's Hearts at Work Program. 100% of your donation makes a difference to Mater patients, colleagues, and the community.
In fact, when you choose to donate $5 pre-tax through Hearts at Work, you're actually only donating $3.40* but Mater receives the full $5 to help the community.

Can I still claim a tax refund on my donation?
No. Your donation is made from pre-tax income and you receive a tax refund at the time of your donation. For this reason, you will not receive a receipt for your donation and cannot claim a further refund in your annual tax return.
Do I need to do anything at tax time?
Yes. You just need to record the annual amount of your donations on your tax return, so the Australian Taxation Office knows that you are participating in a Staff Giving Program and no further tax liability is calculated. Mater Foundation will provide you with your total donation amount at the end of the financial year.
