In loving memory of Fiona

By Fiona Hinchliffe

Our father, Dr Paul Fitz Gerald (Dr Fitz) joined the Mater Adult Hospital in 1978 after many years in general practice and surgical service. He directed emergency services at the Adult Hospital for 18 years, retiring in November 1996.

The Fitz Gerald family sincerely thank you for your condolences and your contribution to the Mater Foundation in memory of our much-loved father, Dr Paul Fitz Gerald

“…I have been and am grateful for being given the opportunity to engage in an occupation which has been worthwhile in itself and has enabled me to make some personal contribution to the work of the Mater and its Mission…There is indeed a Mater Family, and a spirit within that Family to support Mater’s Mission. I pray that this spirit will continue to be nurtured…”

Extract from a letter from Dr Paul Fitz Gerald to the Mater Board on his retirement, December 1996.

Dearest Fitzs Your Dad was such an intelligent gentle empath who loved Robyn and all of you so much. He was also an advocate for the best in literature, music and fine libations - particularly single malts and fine reds - as well as an expert kind doctor. I know from the sad experience of losing my dad it is like losing the family Northstar. He would be so proud of how you have all worked to support your mum and him, keeping them safe and together. He led a rich and happy life leaving many legacies but his greatest legacy is all of you. As I said to J I like to think of him and Don sharing a large glass of Grange wherever they are. Much love

"Those we love don't go away, they sit beside us every day." Dear Fiona from the moment I began working with you I saw the same qualities that had I seen working alongside your Dad. He will be forever remembered by all for his kindness and compassion.
