International Women's Day Fun Run presented by Queensland X-Ray

One of the lucky ones

In April 2024, I found a lump in my right breast. It was a complete fluke and only because my hand happened to cross it in a specific direction. In May, after an ultrasound and mammogram was followed immediately by a core biopsy (thank you, Queensland X-Ray), I found out that I had triple positive breast cancer on the day after Mother's Day.

I was 37 years old when diagnosed, with no family history. My daughter had just turned three years old, my career was on an upward trajectory, and my husband and I had started talking about what trips we should plan for later in the year.

What quickly followed after my initial diagnosis was a rush of appointments, specialists, and scans, and a brutally steep learning curve for both myself and my family. At the end of May, I began a 12-week course of chemotherapy, along with two different immunotherapy drugs and and hormone therapy. Chemo was followed by surgery in August, which was then followed by radiation therapy along with ongoing immunotherapy and hormone therapy, the latter of which I'm still on today.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones. I was lucky to find the lump. I was lucky I did something about it. I was lucky to have a radiologist that took this seriously and scheduled an immediate core biopsy. I was lucky to have such an amazing treatment team. I was lucky to have an incredible family, amazing friends, and a supportive workplace. Most of all, I was lucky to have the best possible outcome, with a complete pathological response.

Two of the immunotherapy drugs I was treated with were not available 10 years ago. These drugs were the direct result of research which, of course, needs funding in order to happen. I am living proof that research matters and that it makes an actual difference to the lives of real people, such as myself and my family. If you can, please donate to our walk so that we can ensure that there are more lucky ones in future.

Your resilience and determination throughout treatment was inspiring sis. You never slowed down, or stopped to get upset, took it by the horns and came out the other side.
