On this day, 18th January 2023, I stood at 3832m under Cristo Redentor de los Andes (Christ the Redemer Statue) at the Uspallata Pass on the border of Chile and Argentina – Day 2 of a 9 day, 1760km ride from Valparaiso, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina. For me, 2023 was about ticking off some personal goals on the bike.
2024 is about helping others and I need your support!
In March this year, I am taking on the Smiling for Smiddy South Australia Challenge with 70 other committed Smiddy riders and road crew to raise critically needed funds to support cancer research. Cycling 670 km and more than 7000 m in climbing over five days. While the physical challenge may not be quite the same as last year’s South American one, the motivation is greater - TO RAISE MONEY AND CURE CANCER!!
Why I chose to ride with Mater Smiling for Smiddy. To THANK, HONOUR, SUPPORT and CURE!
To thank Mater: In 2019 I rode from Townsville to Brisbane to thank The Mater Hospital in their efforts to cure my daughter Paris, who I can confirm is now living her best life and achieving goals we once thought were dreams.
To remember and honour friends who have lost their battle: In 2018, I rode around Tasmania in memory of my mate Tone and Uncle Glynn. On the 16th October 2021 my wife and I lost one of our dearest and closest friends Shelly. That’s her giving ‘the bird’ to cancer! Probably not the photo she would chose but it’s the photo I’ll have stuck to my bike during the ride to remind me that no matter the pain and suffering I’m feeling, it’s nothing compared to the fight she put up.
To support those currently fighting: Just this week, we have received the devastating news that someone extremely dear to our hearts and daily life has been diagnosed with cancer and is up for the battle of her life. Unfortunately, it’s becoming a long list, and we all have our stories.
To Find a cure: One of the Smiddy riders is Professor Brian Gabrielli, who heads up the research at Mater and saddles up to do the km’s and raise funds alongside us. These are his words;
With the support you have already provided us, my laboratory is developing a new drug treatment that we are hoping to have in clinical trial in 2024 for ovarian cancer. This will be a first in human trial for our novel combination therapy for a cancer that has few effective treatments. It will be run from Mater hospital in Brisbane. If it is successful, we will take it into trial for melanoma soon after. This has the potential to make a real difference in patients who are currently without a viable treatment option. You will also be supporting the research of my colleagues at Mater Research in developing new diagnostics and treatments for ovarian, breast and pancreatic cancers. We have a great opportunity a big impact on the suffering a lot of families in Queensland, Australia and across the world.
