Real Impact for Women with Breast Cancer
Community support, from people supporting Mater Chicks in Pink, impacts breast cancer patients at Mater by funding free and personalised breast cancer support services. This includes practical items—creating a positive, significant and real impact.
- Mastectomy bras that support recovery and help women feel confident after breast removal surgery.
- Wigs and scarves that restore a sense of identity and comfort during chemotherapy-induced hair loss.
- Supporting Mater Chicks in Pick also enables investment in cutting-edge medical technology and equipment which delivers rapid diagnosis and critical advancement in breast cancer surgery and outcomes.
One example of this technology is the Savi Scout to patients—a tech device that significantly improves breast cancer treatment.
The Savi Scout is a tiny wireless radar localisation technology that helps cancer surgeons precisely locate breast tumours without the discomfort of traditional methods.
This vital piece of technology has already been delivered to a number of Mater hospitals across Queensland, offering the below benefits:
1. Minimally Invasive: Uses a small reflector the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted in the breast.
2. Increased Comfort: No protruding wires, significantly reducing discomfort.
3. Flexible Scheduling: The reflector can be placed days or even weeks before surgery.
4. Surgical Precision: Real-time guidance during surgery helps preserve healthy tissue.
5. Improved Recovery: Better cosmetic outcomes and reduced tissue trauma.
Dr Susan Bell, Breast Surgeon at Mater, has extensive experience with Savi Scout and says, “All patients that have an impalpable breast cancer will benefit from this technology.”
“A massive thank you to the community that has fundraised for this vital piece of equipment, to give breast cancer patients access to this novel wire-free technology.”
