Survivorship

Mater Women’s Cancer Survivorship Clinic

The Women’s Cancer Survivorship Clinic at Mater, the first of its kind in Queensland, is only made possible thanks to generous community support.

Cancer survivorship is a critical phase in the cancer care continuum, to manage long-term health issues and improve overall wellbeing. Yet there is often minimal support following active treatment, despite the known long-term physical, emotional and psychological effects of cancer treatment.

Michelle, breast cancer survivor, explains that “even when the treatment ended, the heartache didn’t.”

“Despite finishing my active treatment, there were moments I would look in the mirror and not recognise the woman staring back at me,” Michelle reflects.

“I am learning that grief and gratitude can live side by side.”

The Women’s Cancer Survivorship Clinic helps to address the gaps in health and wellbeing for the growing population of female cancer survivors following their treatment.

The clinic provides personalised survivorship care plans, essential for addressing the unique needs of cancer survivors and aiding in their transition to wellness and recovery.

At the heart of the clinic is Leilani Way, a Nurse Navigator. Leilani plays the important role of identifying the needs of cancer survivors, connecting them to the appropriate services and helping to navigate their care pathways.

Leilani reflects on how special it feels to know this project has been funded through fundraising and donations from generous supporters:

“It’s amazing. Just like the community has given back in support of Mater Chicks in Pink, it’s now my responsibility as Nurse Navigator to give back and perform this vital role. It’s a very specific role, and it’s becoming more and more essential for cancer survivors,” Leilani says.
