Final update

The Smiddy Snowies Challenge has now been completed by the great team of riders and support crew. I’m proud to have been part of this wonderful and kind fundraising event. I managed to complete all the five days and 10,000 metres of climbing. Day 1 was long and had a long steep hot climb out of Tumut up which I really struggled, but had good company to keep me going. Day 2 featured the 18km climb with long sections well over 10%, but was cooler and I pushed hard to keep my cadence up being awarded the day’s mountain goat cap for my efforts. Day 3 we repeated this climb and I managed a faster time and lower heart rate, then for the extra challenge we walked up to the top of Mt Kosciuszko despite complaining knees! Day 4 was the descent to Jindabyne and long climb up to Charlotte Pass, with every rider cheered to the top. Day 5….was a different challenge again, setting off in the cold rain, negotiating a long stretch of muddy roadworks on a busy highway, crossing a temporary bridge with clay entry and exit, and keeping hypothermia at bay after the descents. Throughout, the positive support among riders and road crew was amazing.

Thanks again to the generous folk who have donated to the Mater Foundation cancer research.

Day 2

I’ve now finished the second day of the Smiddy Challenge, climbing more than 5000m including some brutal steep climbs.  The great group spirit , the great fundraising cause and the massages are keeping me going. Most of the countryside is spectacular as well.

Will you support my fundraising?

In March, I’ll be joining Challenge Snowies, a five day cycling ride to raise funds for cancer research at the Mater Research Institute that’s investing in some game-changing work into the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer. The course covers 490 km and 10,715 metres of climbing, which will really challenge the endurance of my muscles. In addition to paying the costs of participating, I’m committed to raising $5,000 for the Smiddy cause.

Why am I taking on this challenge? Personally:

1.      I hope to contribute to making the world a better place for future generations.

2.      My father passed away due to cancer when I was a teenager and preventing people like him dying young is worth enormous efforts.

3.      It motivates me to keep training and stay healthy.

Please give whatever you can spare.
