SOMFUKIS Manly Boathouse - 20260531

Today, I rode with SOMFUKIS to the Manly Boathouse. It was an amazing day, even though it was still a bit windy 💨 Blue skies all around, great company to the boathouse, a hellish climb up the Gateway Bridge, and a cruise through all the parks and bridges in the city. Not Felix's kind of ride, though - he's always been the type to embrace nature and quietness over the hustle and bustle of the built-up city ☘️

I've done this ride heaps of times in the past. The biggest difference this time is that it was the longest ride I've done in about 2–3 months, after being hampered by Ramadan, Eid, holidays, a funeral, and other events... so it was a bit of a slog, barely averaging 23 km/h 🥵 Knowing Felix, though, he'd be just as ecstatic for me simply for getting out there and building towards the B2GC in 3 months.

The weather and the company definitely made it heaps enjoyable, despite the slogfest my body made it. Every now and then when I start grinding, I just remind myself how lucky we all are to still be able to enjoy this. Others have not been so fortunate - the Felixs, the Connies, and all the others who are going through or have gone through these tough treatments. We count our blessings... 🙏

Beyond humbled... Thanks all!

I am floored... I'm so humbled and in awe of the support this has gathered 🥰. Thank you everyone for showing up and lending your support to this cause.

I originally set out to honour Felix with a small $500 fundraising goal, but the support has already quadrupled that 😱. Your generosity funds the journey to support those affected and, ultimately, to end this indiscriminate condition.

Here are some facts I gathered from the Mater Research website:

"Cancer is currently the fourth leading cause of death in Australia."

"It’s a sad and confronting reality that one in two Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime."

"Research is the single greatest tool we have in the fight against cancer."

In loving memory of Felix

I've spent a lot of time on the saddle and have done the B2GC several times, but this year, this 100 km challenge carries more weight for me.. I am riding in memory of my mate, Felix Dintner, a man I deeply respected for his humility and endurance.

Felix last participated in this ride around five years ago, around the time he joined our little group on some rides. Unfortunately, just over a year ago, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma (grade 4 brain tumour). He fought it valiantly with the same dignity he showed in every other part of his life, but he sadly passed away at the end of April.

I’m taking on this 100 km journey to raise awareness of this condition and to raise vital funds for cancer research at Mater. While I’m used to the distance, this ride is about more than just the kilometers...it’s about supporting the research that will lead to better outcomes for those affected by cancer in the future.

If you are able to contribute, every donation makes a real difference in the fight against cancers, including aggressive brain tumours. Thank you for helping me honor Felix’s memory and support a cause that impacts so many.
